The First Step That Shaped My Design Journey

One of the best experiences of my design journey
A semester ago, I was exploring graphic design internship opportunities to make meaningful use of my time and gain practical experience alongside college. Around the same period, I had the opportunity to design a logo for Samit. Once the project was completed, we connected over a brief conversation where he asked about my schedule. I shared that my time was largely spent balancing college assignments, personal routines, and the search for a part-time graphic design internship. Without much deliberation, he responded with a simple invitation: “Come join Quawd as a Design Fellow.”
I decided to take that “first step”. While I had my initial reservations about the opportunity, one thought stayed with me: “If not now, then when?” That moment of clarity led me to join Quawd as a Design Fellow.
Based out of my hostel in Vadodara, I began working remotely. The early days involved handling smaller tasks and internal presentations, which gradually introduced me to the fundamentals of design. From understanding core principles and visual elements to colour theory, file organisation, and process discipline, each assignment became a learning block that strengthened my foundation.
As time went on, I was entrusted with larger and more complex responsibilities. Balancing college commitments alongside my work at Quawd was challenging, but consistent support from the team helped me adapt and grow. One lesson that stood out during this phase was Samit introducing me to the concept of the “power of overcommunication.”
That single idea significantly improved the way I worked at Quawd and influenced how I approached every project thereafter. I became more mindful of clarity, context, and tone while communicating in a professional environment. This shift not only strengthened collaboration but also ensured alignment across teams and smoother execution overall.
Samit and the entire team were consistently supportive, whether it involved work for Quawd or feedback on my college portfolio. Their ongoing guidance encouraged me to approach design challenges from new perspectives and refine my thinking as a designer. The progress I’ve made in both design and professional communication throughout this internship has been shaped largely by the support, trust, and feedback of the Squawd.
I’ll always remember “The First Step” while climbing every next step ahead in my design journey.
